The popular restaurant and market Latitude turns five this month, and a delicious celebration is in order.

The campus community is invited for a special menu to be served during lunch (10:30 a.m.-3 p.m.) and dinner (4:30-8 p.m.) on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Arrive early for first-come, first-served swag giveaways and more during the lunch hour celebrations.

When Martin Yan arrived in Davis as an international student in 1969, the minimum wage in California was just $1.65, but he discovered teaching a UC Davis extension course on Chinese cooking could yield $18 an hour. He said he implored the director: 鈥淕ive me a chance to teach a course.鈥�

Latitude Brings Global Flavor to Campus

UC Davis鈥� newest eatery has an international focus, but don鈥檛 expect pizza and chicken teriyaki. It鈥檒l be serving Hanoi turmeric fish with dill and a staff member鈥檚 family recipe for ajiaco, a Colombian soup.

Latitude, a 500-seat dining commons with a separate retail caf茅 serving food to go, opens tomorrow (Jan. 15) on Bioletti Way south of Hutchison Drive, and will be open for lunch and dinner Mondays through Fridays.

It was a party fit for a pop star at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center when cancer patient Makayla Abbe of Pine Grove (Amador County) arrived in a purple Mercedes limo and headed down the red carpet to debut her new music video, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and UC Davis Children鈥檚 Hospital. The 14-year-old signed autographs and took questions from throngs of adoring fans, with paparazzi in tow, all to fulfill her wish of being a 鈥減op star for a day.鈥�

Scrubs Caf茅 Reopens, the Silo to Close

One campus eatery, Scrubs Caf茅, has reopened today (June 4), while another is preparing to close for lengthy renovations.

The Silo 鈥� including Spokes Grill, Cr锚pe Bistro, The Gunrock and Peet鈥檚 Coffee 鈥� will be closed after Friday, June 14, the last day of finals, for construction work, some of it major (new roofing, seismic upgrades), some of it less so (new doors, epoxy flooring in the kitchen). The $2.9 million project is expected to last into early 2020.
